In 1843, Ryoma Sakamoto was 9 years old. Even though Ryoma’s father and older sister wanted him to be a strong samurai, he liked neither studying nor swordplay. Also, he was a cry baby. However, after 9 years Ryoma improved his swordsmanship and became a strong samurai.

Ryoma became 18 years old and he wanted to go to Edo to see the world.

After getting permission from Tosa clan, Ryoma goes to Edo to improve his swordsmanship.

In Edo, Ryoma meets Kogoro Katsura, a member of Choshu clan.

At the arrival of the black ships of Commodore Perry, Ryoma is shocked to learn the power of Western culture and starts to wonder if he should continue the swordsmanship training.

Commodore Perry comes to Japan again. Ryoma meets Shoin Yoshida, the master of Kogoro Katsura, and realizes that he should continue the swordsmanship training.

Ryoma finishes the training and returns to Tosa. Ryoma and his family take their father Hachihei to Katsurahama. Ryoma tells them that his dream is to make a black ship and go to another country with his family.

After Hachihei’s funeral, Ryoma sees Yataro’s father is being beaten by men. Yataro was studying in Edo but after receiving news that his father was injured, he comes back to Tosa.
