Please join us for a week of special programs to celebrate the New Year. Each night from January 1-7, KIKU will air specials ranging from mysteries to the mysterious, beloved favorites to soon-to-become new favorites, and dramas featuring well-known, as well as unlikely stars.

 

Onmyouji

It is the year 960 and myths and beliefs in the super-natural play a large part in the lives of those living in the Heian capital. An exorcist is called to the home of Taira no Sadamori to examine a hideous sore on his face, and concludes someone has taken over Sadamori’s soul. The exorcist hears of other peculiar incidents, and all are tied to Taira no Masakado, who was believed to have died 20 years earlier.

The Last Promise

After years of running a cozy izakaya for a small group of regulars, Heiji puts up a noren to invite new patrons. Will Heiji’s true feelings towards Yukari hurt the others around him? Yutaka Mizutani (star of KIKU’s popular Partner series) returns to KIKU as pub owner Heiji in the fourth installment of our popular Izakaya Moheji specials.
 

Abarenbo Shogun Special

Abarenbo Shogun remains one of the most popular series to ever air on KIKU and depicts events in the life of Yoshimune, the eighth Tokugawa shogun. In this special, a merchant’s house in Edo is set on fire and its proprietor is slain. The murder is witnessed by Kayo, a woman who was forced into divorcing a high-ranking official who was Shinnosuke’s best friend. When Kayo is targeted in a subsequent attack, Shinnosuke assists in her rescue. A clue indicates that all of the incidents are connected, and Shinnosuke and Kayo journey to Tosa to unravel the mystery.
 

Onihei Hankacho Special

Based on a series of Japanese historical novels, Onihei Hankacho is about Heizo Hasegawa, the illegitimate and only son of the head of special police in Edo. Heizo faces resentment from his stepmother, so he runs away from home, becoming the head of a street gang and leading a fast life.
But when his father dies, Heizo realizes his father’s commitment to fighting crime and goes on to lead a band of samurai police and reformed criminal informants to solve difficult crimes. His actions cause a villain to nickname him Onihei, meaning Heizo, the demon.
While he was called a demon and feared, he was forgiving and merciful to those who committed a crime out of necessity even if they were criminals. Heizo even dedicated himself to establish and maintain a vocational training school for criminals.
 

Shitto (Jealousy)

Shizuka and Takashi Noguchi have been married 10 years and like all married couples, experience happy times and minor disagreements. So Shizuka is shocked to learn her husband died at a traditional inn in Hakone when he was supposed to be on a business trip. She is even more shocked to learn he died by suicide while in the company of a high-end Ginza club proprietress and that both had taken sleeping pills in a double suicide pact.
When she learns the woman survived the suicide attempt, Shizuka is determined to get to the bottom of the relationship.

Prosecutor Nao Komazuki and Attorney Madoka Tsutaya dated for seven years but even after breaking up, they continue to be hopelessly linked to each other because of their jobs.
When a major case arises that pits them against each other again, both pursue the truth from different standpoints and see each other more and more. Although both are now engaged to be married to other people, as facts in the new case come to light, the time comes for Nao and Madoka to make a life choice.
