Friday, 1/1/10, 5-10pm - 60th Annual Red and White Song Contest
The annual music show produced by Japanese broadcaster NHK, dividing the most popular music artists of the year into competing teams of red and white. The red team consists of all female artists (or groups with female vocals), while the white team is all male (or groups with male vocals). The honor of performing on Kohaku is strictly by invitation, so only the most successful singers will perform. A performance on Kohaku is said to be a big highlight in a singer's career because of the show's large reach and prestige.
 
Sunday, 1/3/10, 7-8pm - Mysteries of China
Blessed with an abundant environment, a rich 5,000-year history, and diverse peoples and cultures, so much of China remains unknown even to its own people. Mysteries of China is a travelogue into the heart of China. Journey with us to explore the hidden sights, sounds and tastes of China.

The final episode of NHK's year long Taiga drama comes to a close with this 1-1/2 hour long episode.

Based on a true story, To Be As You Are demonstrates how love can overcome the sorrows and hardships families face. When Yoshika begins to suffer memory loss, her husband, Yasushi tenderly proclaims his love for her and vows to accept her for who she is.

Although regarded as the symbol of the state and of the unity of the Japanese people, the Emperor and his entourage have long been cloaked in tradition. However, wanting to be closer to the people, the Imperial Family broke out of its shell, visiting disaster areas and paying visits to the war memorials commemorating the bloodiest battlegrounds of WWII.

Wednesday, 1/6/10, 8-10pm - Keiji Ichidai, Part 1
Starring The Last Samurai's Ken Watanabe, Keiji Ichidai is based on the life story of Hachibe Hiratsuka, a distinguished detective who lived in the post World War II era. Hachibe was known for single-handedly solving one of the most well-known kidnapping cases in Japan during a period when the country was emerging from the dark years following the war. His courage and perseverance came to symbolize the change going through the country at the time.
