This Sunday, we begin a new series called The Fat Detective. Actually, The Fat Detective is the title we’ve given the series. Sometimes we do this when a title doesn’t easily translate from Japanese to English. In Japan, the series was titled 110k (kilogram) Detective. Since most people in Hawaii wouldn’t be able to easily relate to how heavy 110 kilograms is, we changed the title. (In case you’re interested, 110k is about 242 pounds.)
The Fat Detective title may be a little unfair and discriminatory, but you can understand that a title like The 242-Pound Detective just wouldn’t have had the same impact.
Taro Hanazawa is a 20-year police veteran who works at a neighborhood koban, or community police station. Taro is an excellent police officer, but his weight prevents his superiors from taking him seriously and he keeps getting passed over for promotions.
That is, until an astute female division chief observes Taro’s keen police skills in action and taps him to join her special investigative squad. Once he becomes a detective, Taro’s police skills shine, forcing people to re-evaluate their previously held misconceptions about him.
Watch The Fat Detective. This Sunday, 8/18/13, from 9-10pm.
