Tonight (8/21) and next Wednesday (8/28), we are airing a two part special in place of our regular Mystery Theatre. It is titled Castle of Sand and it was written by the famous Japanese mystery writer Seicho Matsumoto. KIKU has aired other specials by Seicho Matsumoto in the past: Ten to Sen (Points and Lines) and Suna no Utsuwa.
Castle of Sand is about a murder that takes place in the early dawn of December 11, 1960. The body of a middle-aged man is discovered at a rail yard at Tokyo’s Kamata train station. His face has been beaten to the point where he is unrecognizable, but it is determined that the cause of his death was strangulation, not bludgeoning.
Two detectives are tasked with tracking down the murderer and must use all their skills to uncover clues and identify the victim. This is truly a story of mystery and intrigue.
We first aired this special earlier this year in January, as part of our New Year’s specials. Whether you saw it earlier or not, it’s an excellent mystery and you will get caught up trying to figure out who the murderer is along with the detectives.
